THE CURRENT REPORT

Everything you need to know about South Jersey fishing conditions, striped bass activity, tides, and what's biting in the surf and back bays.

Cold Water, First Movement

MARCH 18–25

Most people still think it’s too early. They’re wrong. New Jersey has officially crossed into the early spring grind, and while it’s not wide open yet, the first real push of striped bass is here if you know where to look. Water temps are finally climbing out of the 30s and touching the low 40s in the back. That’s all it takes this time of year.

STRIPER BITE

This isn’t a numbers game. It’s a patience game. Fish are scattered through rivers, creeks, and back bays, holding in deeper channels and mud where the water’s just a little warmer. They’re moving—but not stacked.

  • Bloodworms are still king
  • Slow plastics and small plugs will get picked at
  • Night tides > everything
  • Mornings are producing if temps hold overnight

You might get one shot… maybe two. Make it count.

OTHER ACTION

White perch are keeping rods bent in the usual backwater spots if you need to stay tight. Winter flounder are starting to show just enough to remind you they exist—but it’s early.

CONDITIONS

  • Backwaters: low 40s
  • Ocean: still cold, still behind
  • Weather swings = bite swings

A couple warm, stable days will change everything fast.

THE READ

Right now? This is for the grinders. The guys putting time in, fishing slow, and keying in on warmer water are already into fish. Everyone else is still waiting for “the season” to start. It already did.

DEAD CURRENT TAKE

You don’t wait for the bite this time of year.

You find it first.
